Mrs. Ivy Brothers is one of Virginia’s most outstanding American Sign Language interpreters. It is through her education that she decided to pursued a life long career as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. Mrs. Ivy Brothers received education in cultural and language studies from Roanoke Bible College. In 2004, Mrs. Brothers received her Masters in Education from Regent University. For over 26 years, Mrs. Brothers was an interpreter at The Lost Colony in Manteo, NC. It is here that she Interpreted drama and coordinate sign language interpreters for the summers outdoor performances.
Mrs. Brothers has also served as an Out Reach Specialist at the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She encompassed eleven counties networking with agencies for better communication and use of services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, to include all forms of communication i.e.; cued speech, oral, deaf-blind, minimal language skills and relay interpreting. Since 1990, she has been the owner of IB Interpreting, thus allowing her to continue providing ASL communication to those in need.
Along with over 30 years of experience as an ASL interpreter, Mrs. Ivy Brothers has shown years of dedication to the education and enhancement of others. She was an adjunct professor at the Mid Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City, NC. This is where she taught a course on ASL and the introduction to Deaf community and culture. Mrs. Brothers spent three years as a Staff Instructor, Interpreter, and Trainer/Interpreter at the Virginia School for the Deaf Blind and Multi-Handicapped. As an Instructor at Martin Community College, she taught ASL for over eight years for various professionals.
